How to Be an Effective Capoeira Fighter

Mestre Jelon Vieira: If someone comes to me and says, “I want to become a Capoeira fighter.”

Before he/she will learn how to fight Capoeira, they have to learn the art of capoeira, so they can use it as a fight when is time, if it ever come to that time of using Capoeira to self defense. But to become a good Capoeirista, we never really use the word Capoeira fighter, we use capoeirista, or player, Capoeira player. To become a good Capoeirista, or a good fighter, you must train, it’s the true secret I always tell my students. Training, training and training. There is no other option. It’s a work, just like anything else, if you want to be good you have to work. No pain, no gain.

Professor Vieira: When you start training Capoeira, it comes very confusing to be able to distinguish, you know, when to esquive, when to go down, when to kick, it’s something you develop over time, you know, it’s meter of developing momentum and we training, years of practicing you know, anyone to capoeira will have that, that skills of being able to esquive, you know, usually there is no sigh you know, no free to esquive, it’s just like were standing against you, openly, you never know when that person will pouch, it’s a meter of knowing when to esquive, to dock, you know, it’s meter of knowing how close you get or how far away she moves. So, in capoeira is the same thing, you know, you never know when your partner will strike, but usually, you know, once you become more comfortable with the jinga and you get a good sense of distance, you know, there is thing should help you understand when to esquive, when to kick and the only way out is to practice and to play as much as you can to play with different people because playing with the each person will be a different experience and the more you play the more experience you get in the world of capoeira.
