How to Parry & Block UFC Training

Parries and Blocks. The best way I feel to explain that, or to define that would be: A perry is a technique which you are using to deflect your opponent’s offensive move, close the distance, and get in with your technique, be it a body hook or face cross. You’re trying to deflect their offensive move. If it’s a block, you’re trying to stop the move completely. You’re not trying to stay moving, you’re just trying to stop it. I’m going to try to show you both ways today. I’m going to try to show you a parry with the upper body, a parry with the lower body, a block with the lower body and a block with the upper body. Right now Nicholas is going to be standing left guarding, which is what I explained before, left guarding is he’s guarding himself with his left side of his body and he’s going to throw a right cross. When he throws a right cross, I’m going to parry this with my left arm on my left hand. So as he throws a right cross, I’m going to parry it. Now he’s going to be in a better position now, maybe I can come over the top with a cross. That’s a parry. Now the difference between a block. Maybe he throws a punch again and this time I just block. Now I’ve tried to make his hand hit my elbow, and I’ve just blocked it away from me. I’m not trying to get myself in a better position to do anything, I’m just actually blocking. Now look at the lower part of my body. Nicholas throws a locate to my leg and I block it, this is a block. And I blocked the kick from coming around to the left. Now I’ve explained this a little bit sometimes in class, I’ll explain where someone brings their block up but they’re blocking completely wrong. Now you can call this a parry as a standard fighter. Parry is to the side, throw my knee into the side. So those are two parries and blocks in two different ways, one’s high and one’s low.
